The OH is SSOOO cool!! It's so convienient for the area because really, there isn't any big shows and stuff to go to around here and it provides plenty of entertainment for the audience. I especially like to be in them! (Even though I've only been in 2 OHP plays and am going to be in 3. I can't wait untill Annie! ) So keep it up!!

Hey! The Wizard Of Oz, as you all know was a big success. Keep it up OHP! I have just got done with another play called "Suesical" and my friends told me they saw me in some OHP plays. I told them if they wanted to be in a OHP, I will tell them when the tryouts will be held for another play. Now, they are all about blabbing it to the whole school! Your performances are realy fantastic. We have very many good, young and older acters + actresses. Yet, you still have more performances to come. I give you ! Much Abliged***

Scrolling through the posted messages I saw one from Joe Boland & he mentioned "Meet Me in St. Louis," presented by St. Joe h.s. students back in the late 40's. I was only 10 then, was chosen to play the part of "Tootie" & had a grand time biting the leg of a Muehe boy (Jim, maybe?) once every performance! My family lived in Elkader from 1940-1950; Dad (H.L. "Count" McCauley) worked for his brother, Lester, in Mac's Clothing Store on the main drag. I love Elkader, always have, & try to make a visit every couple of years. Happy to see OHP alive & well. Keep nurturing the treasure & talent!!

Wanted to say "Break a Leg" to the entire cast & crew of Wizard of Oz!
I had the great pleasure of being in McGregor Ia for the birth of my Grandson...Samuel David Shaw to my daughter...Suzanne...(Run for Your Wife) and my son in law ...Victor!!!
During that happy time..Victor & Suzanne shared a wonderful trip for me to your Thearte!!! JUST BEAUTIFUL!!! Now I know why Victor & Suzanne have fallen in love with the OHP!!!
I only wish I could have stayed longer to see "my son in law" on stage...!! Not only his "one " line...but his DANCING!!! What a hoot!!!
Not only is your thearte WONDERFUL...but seeing the cast & crew in final rehersals was thrilling...!!! The costumes beautiful..and of course I got to see some of Victor's handi work...( with his sewing machine..) I have seen his "handy work " with my Darling Darby and Little David...!!! lol
Best of luck to the ENITRE CAST & BACK STAGE CREW!!!
I am honored to have visited your "home" and I will be "thinking" about you ALL Opening Nite and thereafter!

I am so amazed at the professionalism of your group. I feel the region is so fortunate
to have people like you who care and want to share their talents with all. I found an interresting website dealing with Oz..
http://www.beyondtherainbow2oz.com/stagethewizard.html

It's called "We're Off To Stage The Wizard" all about , you guessed it, staging of Oz. At the bottom of the page is an animated gif of Dorothy clicking her ruby slippers . I'm looking forward to your presentation and yet I know you will pull it off in top form.
Again, thank you for being here and best of luck in the years to come.

To The Web Master: Thank you so much for your hard work esp in keeping everyone up to date on the Show ! Even though I could not make it up North to see the actual show..I felt very close to the ENTIRE cast & Crew!!! The set was beautiful....the cast looked like they were having fun...and being in several shows myself..I REALLY appreciate the crew "back stage"...Thank you again Web MAster for your time spend in sharing...! I do have to say...the VERY LAST PICTURE was special for me ..(because I know & understand "back stage")...I saw your most adorable fan sound asleep with her bottle & toys..while Mom was "on stage" and Dad was being PROUD!!! Thanks again for you time and Best of Luck for the up coming plays to the entire OHPs... Sincerely Sara T. Holshouser

Just had to jump in here. I must say, this has been fun. The guestbook hasn't seen such activity for some time. Glad to see that people are enjoying the site, and as we get closer to the show, stick around to see cast and production photos. I usually don't release production photos till after the run, so you'll have to anxiously wait if you don't want to make the trip to see the show (with out a doubt worth the trip! )

In the meantime... although you may be making Victor Crazy (and Suzanne does a good enough job of that herself) some of us actually enjoy reading people's personal email material online.
It just make's us jealous that our friends aren't signing the guestbook.

Wow...
Welcome to the "Shaw Family Personal Ego Boosting Website"...
If I had any idea we were so highly thought of we'd still be there..

But!
Thought I'd enter a quick note to explain to the people from the South exactly how a Guestbook works.
As you can see from the notes left prior to last week, comments are nornally limited to either
(A) The Play that was just on...
(B) The condition of, or facts provided in the Website..
(C) Questions about how you can help..
(D) Comments about the beautifully restored theater...
(E) Comments concerning a specific Performance..(That you've seen.)

In the North..we all have E-Mail..No need to make specific hellos here, thats normally reserved for personal E-Mails...

Watch this here's how its done.

Hi.
My name is Victor Shaw..
I recently moved to the area and am thrilled to be helping with the "Run For Your Wife" performance. The rehearsals seem to be going well even if Suzannes every third line seems to be "Line". (What's that all about?), and oh yeah the sets look great..
This has to be the nicest Theater I'ver been in bar none.(and yes and I've seen a few). You have no idea how truly lucky you are.
The quality of the woodwork and the finish and materials used in the seat and stairwell restorations are simply top notch..I had no idea when we moved here there was a group with these abilities or facility of this quality in the area. Everyone has been so friendly and you simply can't imagine how much easier it has made the move here. If Suzanne wasn't so busy and happy she'd have killed me by now.

Good luck on Thursday, break some legs..

See how hard was that.
Luv you all,

Having known Suzanne since the day she was born she has always been the ham. She has been a performer since she was in diapers. It is very exciting to see her and her husband Victor on such a website. Having been a close friend of her late father Sam, I am sure he would be very proud of his little girl. Sam was always such a devoted friend of the theatre. Im quite sure that someday Darby will be following in her moms footsteps on the stage. My best wishes to OHP and good luck to Suzanne and Victor.

I love watching productions. I wish I could be in more, but that's even more difficult now that I'm in college. Being in Hello Dolly was a once in a lifetime experience. I'm excited to come down and see Run for your Wife with my g/f. We're both looking forward to seeing quite a production. I can't wait to see the result of the remodel. Last time I was down there the grand staircase still had a 2x4 railing, and the lobby had concrete floors and bare plaster walls. You should make the show news and OHP news available as an .rss feed to make keeping up with the OHP news a snap! Keep up the good work!

Just read the article in Cedar Rapids paper about the renovation and I am impressed--looks just great. I was in the play "Meet me in St Louis" in 1948 or 1949--our director was Marian Bink. I will always remember it and will stop to see the opera house this coming summer when we travel north to Minnesota and Iowa to visit relatives and friends. Our family grew up in Elkader. My grandfather James Boland lived on a farm 5 miles north on highway 56. i am just going through a diary he wrote in every day from 1858 to 1864 and it has a lot of history of the area, along with a lot of names of people living in that time frame. I think it is wonderful that the work that has been done will keep the opera house going for many years to come.
Congratulations!

Thanks to Craig Strutt filling me in on the details, I just finished taking the year long tour of construction progress for the wonderful old Opera House. Words cannot do justice to the work that has been accomplished. I know the grand old lady is pleased with her "new" look. Congratulations on yet another wonderful renovation of that wonderful Opera House. The volunteer spirit lives on in my other "home town," Elkader. Saw the story in the DM Register last week about the new front doors. Came to the site to see if there were other pictures. The interior shot is spectacular. How fantastic! Each "updo" has been better than the last. This one looks to be the best yet. What did you do with the stairs? Did it go back to the center? I'd love to see a picture of that. Has it been in the CC Register? The "never say die" spirit of folks in Elkader is a model for other small communities looking for ways to keep going. It's been that way for many decades. It's obvious you've all still GOT IT!
God bless!

After talking to Terri Strutt this morning, I will still include a notice about the Dallas Brass in our CPA newsletter - I made about 20 posters to put up around PdC, Marquette & McGregor! I'll notify Prairie High talent that the summer musical idea is off till 2004. I'm looking forward to seeing your cast list for The Murder Room. I'm glad those dates won't conflict with CPA's 20th anniversary event - the UW Varsity Band Show directed by Prof. Mike Leckrone will perform Tuesday, April 8, 7:30 in the PdCHS gym!

For those of you who are interested. Janet and I and the rest of the family are going to be moving back to Elkader, probably around the end of the year. We'll be house hunting the weekend we come up for the C.O.E. performance on 10-12-02. Know anyone who wants to buy a house in Altoona?

Life is WONDERFUL! But there are some things and people I miss from NE Iowa, and lots of the folks on this website come to mind! We're having fun down here; Julie just got a job teaching HS English in Stuart. This is a mighty fine town, but lots of folks are pretty upset over the Cedar Bridge arson.
No community theater in my life now, but I do direct the pit for our high school musicals. We're doing Into The Woods this fall. Last year it was Scrooge (fun show - best unfamiliar music) and the years before it was Sound of Music and West Side Story (that book is TOUGH. my clarinets learned new high notes).
Craig, this site is fantastic. Bravo to you, and to all of you who have committed to the very very special thing known as the Opera House Players. Some of the finest experiences of my life, and it was just two shows.
Cool.

Hi Great site. I was Bonnie in Anything Goes many, many years ago. Saw Tom & Barb Chandler this past week in Duluth for a band convention and Dennis Hanna. I used to teach in the area and really miss the times at the Opera house. Looking forward to your celebration of 100 years. Let me know what is happening for that! Was also in Woman at Dead Oaks and played in the orchestra for a few! Keep up the good work and say hi to the "oldies" for me! Karen

Hey kids! Long time, no see!
I was just poking around the internet and found all the pictures of the renovations. Wow! You're doing a fabulous job! I can't wait to see it when it's done. Hopefully I'll be back for a visit when you're running a show sometime. I'm booked in rehearsals and shows up here through September, but maybe I'll make it back for your October show. By the way - you missed listing a show for me! I was in "Chicago", too!!

Great site!!! I love to go through and look at all the show's that have been done and remember some familiar faces. I spent many happy evenings as a kid sleeping under the chairs in the front row while dad was in the pit and mom on stage. I noticed that there aren't any photo's for Fiddler on the Roof up yet. I do have some if you're interested. Really thrilled with the restoration work that is going on inside the opera house! Looking forward to this falls show!!! :-)

I would like to thank OHP for the use the stump. We used it in the Ankeny Community Theatre's production of Lil' Abner. It was fun to watch fellow cast members pick it up for the first time and expect it to be solid. That example is just a microcosm of all the detail OHP puts into its productions. I hope to have it back to Elkader in time for "Stardust".
